Luxuria Lifestyle’s Beth Davies reviews Penha Longa Resort Portugal

Tucked away in the lush hills of Sintra, Portugal, the Penha Longa Resort is far more than a luxurious hotel – it’s an immersive experience and a memory waiting to happen. This resort stood out for its flawless combination of refined elegance and heartfelt, personalised hospitality.

The 5-star resort in Portugal is the only hotel within the natural park, seamlessly incorporating a 14th-century monastery and chapel within its luxurious setting. A 27-hole championship golf course is to be played and admired, family-focused activities celebrate nature and tradition, and two of seven dining experiences hold coveted Michelin stars. Penha Longa truly has everything you need.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear we were in for something special. We were welcomed with sparkling wine, delicate handmade treats, and a beautifully curated, personalised itinerary that mapped out our stay with thoughtful precision. But what truly took me by surprise was the tent waiting in our suite – not for me, but for my little one. A miniature canvas hideaway complete with soft pillows and activities, it was part of the resort’s in-room camping experience, bookable online. My son’s face lit up the moment he saw it, and it quickly became his favourite nook during our stay.

Our accommodations were nothing short of spectacular. We stayed in the Executive Suite, and it felt more like a private apartment than a hotel room. A separate living area with plush seating, a luxurious bedroom with a cloud-like bed, and a spacious bathroom that could rival any spa – it all exuded refined comfort. I also had the chance to peek into the Grand Room during our stay, and the sense of space and elegance there was just as impressive. The hotel has recently had a renovation, all of the rooms have been given a makeover and are now incredibly modern and stylish.

Beyond the suite doors, Penha Longa proves itself as a destination for all ages. Families will find a wealth of activities designed to engage and delight. The resort offers a thoughtfully curated children’s program featuring outdoor playgrounds, afternoon tea, family picnics, and even mini mixology workshops for the little ones. There’s truly something for every age and interest, making it the perfect getaway for families looking to balance rest and adventure.

For the sportier types, Penha Longa is home to one of Europe’s top 100 golf courses. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the resort’s 27-hole championship course has even played host to the Portugal Open. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just want to enjoy the stunning natural surroundings, it’s a highlight not to be missed. And if the coast is calling, you’re in luck – Cascais and Estoril’s beautiful beaches are just a 10-minute drive away, offering the perfect blend of mountains, luxury, and sea.

Of course, no luxury stay is complete without some self-care. I took full advantage of the Penha Longa Spa, indulging in their Signature Massage – a deeply relaxing, expertly delivered treatment that left me floating. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and tranquil ambiance, it was a serene oasis that set the tone for the rest of the trip.

Dining at Penha Longa is a journey of its own. Our dinners at Mercatto were nothing short of divine. Each dish was a celebration of flavour, crafted with care. The staff here transformed dinner into a fine dining experience through their attentiveness and genuine warmth. Every morning we returned to Mercatto for breakfast, and the offerings – fresh pastries, local fruits, and made-to-order delights – were as indulgent as they were satisfying.

For a more casual midday meal, we often headed to The Lounge. Light, airy, and relaxed, it was the perfect spot to recharge. One waitress, in particular, was a standout – her warm smile and memory for our little quirks made lunch feel like dining with an old friend. She remembered our food orders and always made a special effort to engage with my child, which did not go unnoticed.

In a world where luxury can sometimes feel cold or clinical, Penha Longa Resort has struck gold. It’s a place where the grandeur of five-star living is softened by deeply human hospitality. Whether you’re travelling with family, as a couple, or simply seeking solitude, the resort embraces you like an old friend, with elegance, care, and an unmistakable warmth.

Final Verdict: If you’re seeking a resort that marries opulence with heart, Penha Longa should be at the top of your list. Trust me – this is one stay you won’t soon forget.
