Luxuria Lifestyle interviews Putu GM of Kayumanis Ubud Bali
Cocooned within a tropical forest overlooking the Ayung River, Kayumanis Ubud offers an intimate and luxurious escape for travellers seeking tranquillity and cultural immersion. Here we interview Putu, the General Manager, to discuss the unique offerings of this resort, his wishes for its future, and the essence of Balinese hospitality.
Can you share with us the history and inspiration behind Kayumanis Ubud?
Kayumanis Ubud Villa was built by blending nature, culture, and the hospitality of the Balinese people into a foundational concept, which is: Spaciousness, Personalized Service, and Privacy for a hospitality property.
What are some of the unique experiences that guests can expect at Kayumanis Ubud that set it apart from other resorts in Bali?
We believe that our fundamental concept makes our property unique, including:
Spaciousness: This is inspired by the traditional Balinese house concept, which features expansive spaces with separate buildings for the bedroom and living area, using thatched roofs. For landscape design, we apply a tropical-minimalist concept in plant selection.
Personalized Service reflects the hospitality of the Balinese people, which we incorporate into Kayumanis’ core values to provide attentive service to our guests.
Privacy is essential to ensure the comfort of guests as they celebrate special moments with their partners or families at Kayumanis Ubud.”
How do you integrate Balinese culture and traditions into the guest experience at Kayumanis Ubud?
We incorporate Balinese culture and traditions into our operations through the experience of staying with us:
Guests can stay at Kayumanis Ubud in buildings with Balinese ambience, walkways designed like rural paths, villa entrances resembling traditional Balinese gates, and outdoor showers in each villa to provide the experience of bathing in the open air.
For greeting guests, we adopt the Balinese custom of presenting a traditional salute by placing both palms together at the chest.
At our events, we showcase Balinese performances, including gamelan music and traditional Balinese dance.
Our food menu features Balinese specialities such as Bebek Betutu, Fried Duck, Bebek Menyatnyat, and Sayur Urap. We also offer various Balinese snacks during afternoon tea for our guests.
Sustainability is a key concern for many travellers today, how do you ensure these standards are met?
We implement sustainability by maximizing the use of environmentally friendly materials, including:
Reducing the use of plastic and Styrofoam materials.
Conserving electricity and water.
Maintaining shaded plants and green open spaces as guest facilities.
Collaborating with the local community to supply some of our needs, such as decorative items made from coconut leaves, vegetables, and fresh fruits.
Can you tell us about any recent or upcoming developments at the resort?
We have just recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, during which we fought to keep the property operated and did not lay off any employees. Moving forward, we remain committed to being a resort that continues to reflect Balinese hospitality, culture, and traditions.
How has the hospitality industry in Bali evolved over the years, and how has Kayumanis Ubud adapted to these changes?
The development of accommodations in Bali has been quite rapid, with a variety of hotels, villas, and private villas emerging. To adapt to this, we at Kayumanis continue to maintain our company’s concept and values while also adapting to technological advancements and market trends. This allows us to keep communication with potential customers increasingly close.
What challenges do you face in maintaining the high service standards at Kayumanis Ubud, and how do you overcome them?
The challenge is to maintain consistent service standards and ensure guest comfort. Our efforts include:
Continuously providing regular training to all staff to ensure that Kayumanis’ values remain the foundation of our guest service.
Maintaining and caring for all property and facilities used by guests, and adapting to technological advancements.
Could you share a memorable guest experience or feedback that stands out to you during your time as General Manager?
Most of our guests greatly appreciate the building design that reflects Balinese culture, such as the use of traditional angkul-angkul entrances, thatched roofs, and outdoor showers as a form of bathing in the open air. Kayumanis also emphasizes sincerity and care in providing service, which is a cultural heritage of Balinese hospitality
How do you ensure your staff is trained to provide the exceptional service Kayumanis Ubud is known for?
