Joseph Clarkson to exhibit unseen work at the Mandrake Hotel
The Mandrake Hotel is to showcase Joseph Clarkson exclusive fashion photography exhibition during London Fashion Week.
Fitzrovia’s multi-award-winning hotel, The Mandrake, continues its Artist In Residence series, introducing exclusive works from cult fashion photographer, Joseph Clarkson. Exhibiting across London Fashion Week (from 14th – 21st February 2023) and paired with a delicious new curated lunch menu at YOPO, the standout photography will be showcased in the hotel and open to the public.
The art series, hosted in The Mandrake’s Entrance Portal and entitled, ‘A Parasite in Rich Soil’s Delight’, will offer visitors to the hotel, art critics and fashion lovers an insight into the creative and eclectic brain of artist, actor and live performer, Joseph Clarkson.
Alongside, Clarkson will be shooting a new body of work, using the hotel’s rich interiors as the empowering backdrop. For the Artist In Residence series, he has hand selected an amazing pool of creatives to collaborate with him during the residency, including Sophia Hadjipanteli and Malthus.
As well as featuring as the model in the series, the title of the project was inspired by Malthus’ music. Elements of the final works are clean and beautiful, and the retrospective invites guests to reconsider stereotypical fashion images.
The exhibition is a fashion-led interpretation of the life journey of a worm, coming up from the soil and experiencing its senses, the world and its surroundings for the first time. Taking an idea that seems quite mundane and simple, and flipping it on its head, Clarkson worked alongside an impressive team of creatives on the project.
The standalone images will be displayed in frame and enhanced by Botanist, Hamish Powell, who will transform the pieces from 2D to 3D with carefully placed foliage and natural greenery. A short film will complement the exhibition and will be projected in Studio 5 at the hotel, marking Clarkson’s directional debut.
Joseph Clarkson, Artist in Residence at The Mandrake Hotel, says: “I have hand selected an amazing pool of creatives to collaborate with during my residency. Working on a number of diverse creative projects, from a twins birthing mutation story, to turning Sophia Hadjipanteli into a living piece of art. My intention is to turn The Mandrake’s setting into three different worlds, while still in-keeping with the hotel’s aesthetic. I have been given the freedom to get creative and be ambitious, and that is exactly my intention for these projects. I am very excited to share this with the public very soon.”
Visitors to the hotel can also make the most of a new and indulgent curated lunch menu at The Mandrake’s destination restaurant YOPO. Available between 12:00pm and 3:00pm, Monday to Friday, the restaurant which is famed for its eclectic design, moody lighting, and South American menu with European influences, is the perfect visual backdrop and stop off for those flitting between fashion shows or hoping for a first look at Joseph Clarkson’s artworks.
For just £45 per person including two glasses of wine, guests can decide between three indulgent courses. Starter options include a delightful Burrata and Comice Pear served with Walnuts and Radicchio’s and Grilled Octopus with Potato, Caper leaf and Hot Smoked Paprika. Mains include Lamb Shoulder Adobo and Cod with Bomba Rice and Artichokes. Guests can finish on a sweet note with a selection of delicious desserts.
The Mandrake’s Artist in Residence program plays host to new talent regularly and strives to provide an interactive playground. One where artist and visitor interact in the hotel’s exquisitely designed spaces to create original, unique, provocative, and live works of art. Hotel guests and visitors witness close-hand the creative process of The Mandrake’s artists and are often part of the work itself, becoming an essential element of the photo, painting, mural or tattoo.
