Hippo arrival at Mont Eco Game Reserve: Welcoming our newest residents
At Mont Eco Game Reserve, our vision is to restore the rich biodiversity that once flourished in this region, encompassing both its plant life and the wildlife that once roamed freely. Every new species we reintroduce brings us one step closer to that goal. Today, we are excited to announce the latest addition to our wildlife family: a mother hippo and her calf.
Arriving in the early hours of 11 October 2024, this mother-calf duo marked a monumental moment in our conservation journey. As seen in the video shared on our social media, it was clear from the moment they set foot on Mont Eco’s land that they knew they were ‘home.’ The calm way they explored their new surroundings, with the mother gently guiding her calf, reflected the peace and security we strive to create for all species on our reserve.
We are so excited to see their seemingly calm demeanour and strong bond, showcasing the deep connection between mother and calf as they confidently navigate their new environment.
Scientifically speaking, hippos are a keystone species in their ecosystems. Their presence can have a profound impact on the landscape, supporting the overall health of their habitat. Though they may appear as gentle giants, hippos are incredibly powerful and territorial, traits that help them protect their young and maintain the balance of their environment. Unlike many large herbivores, hippos spend a significant amount of time submerged in water, which helps regulate their body temperature and protects their sensitive skin from the harsh African sun. Hippos also graze mostly at night, using their size and strength to travel long distances in search of grasslands, which make up an important part of their diet.
At Mont Eco, their addition plays a crucial role in our mission to restore balance. Their presence will enhance the diversity of the land, and we are excited to see how they thrive alongside the other species in our care.
We invite you to visit Mont Eco Game Reserve and witness this exciting moment firsthand. Whether you’re here for a day drive or an extended stay, our new hippo residents are sure to be a memorable highlight of your experience.
Welcome home, mom and calf—we are thrilled to have you with us and look forward to watching you become an integral part of Mont Eco’s journey.
