Glasgow-based Jayne Lasley (neé Fairlie) had always dreamed of having her own fashion business. During her time at Heriot-Watt University in the Scottish Borders had designed and made her own fuller bust collection because of her own struggle to find suitable clothing for her degree in Textile Fashion Design & Management.

A success story in the making, Jayne began working in fashion buying before she had even donned her graduation cap and gown for Scottish company Internacionale. A successful career followed including three years at New Look before moving back to Scotland to marry the Motherwell football player Keith Lasley (now coach).

However, at the back of her mind there was always a niggle that she should be running her own fashion business, but like so many working women, with a full-time job and two children, she wasn’t sure how to make it all work.

Then in 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic hit and Jayne was put on furlough leave. She says, “At 40 years old, I thought I was too old to start my own business and hung back. Then fate stepped in one day during the first lockdown when I was clearing out my garage and found my old university course work including styling, designs and a branding pack for a fashion business called Fairlie Curved. I still loved the name even after so many years and I had noticed that there weren’t many options for women with a fuller bust – lots of lingerie, but not actual clothes.

“With this in mind, I started a Fairlie Curved styling page on Instagram, which really took off and within a few weeks had gained over 1000 followers. In fact, I was inundated with people asking me where they could buy my clothes from, which made me realise that there was definitely a market out there for what I wanted to do.

I also conducted an Instagram poll to find out what people were struggling to buy and the response was loud and clear – good fitting tee shirts were a real problem for fuller busted women. So, I dug out my sewing machines from the loft and sourced the organic cotton tee, which I then altered to give it the perfect hourglass fit.

“This finally started to give me the belief that setting up my own business was achievable and within my grasp, so in July 2020 I decided to really go for it with Fairlie Curved. My vision was to offer fashionable, but classic options that would stand the test of time, but also be empowering for women with a larger bust who find sourcing clothes for themselves difficult. I just want women to feel great about themselves!

“I’m also really conscious about being environmentally friendly and will always use local suppliers where possible. All my tee shirts are printed in Glasgow and the hand embroidery is also done locally here in Glasgow. Wherever possible I ensure that items are made in the UK and that all the packaging is 100% recyclable.”

“The business has really taken off with rapid expansion from just the core products such as tees, sweatshirts and fashion wardrobe staples to jackets, activewear, knitwear, accessories and statement jewellery. I hope that I’m now providing stylish and ageless solutions for women all ages – and there’s lots more to come so watch this space.”
