Debbie Stone reviews The Crown at Bray: A quintessentially British pub

Nestled in the village of Bray, The Crown is everything you could wish for in a classic British pub. With its cosy interiors, it’s roaring fires and ancient beams, it immediately exudes old-world charm. My recent Sunday lunch experience here was nothing short of delightful, and it’s clear why The Crown is such a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

The ambience inside is warm and welcoming, filled with character and history. Low-beamed ceilings and rustic wooden tables, create a snug atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy a leisurely meal. There’s a timeless quality to the space that makes you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, yet it still feels inviting and comfortable.

The service was impeccable from start to finish. The staff were attentive and friendly, managing to strike that perfect balance of being helpful without hovering. It’s evident that they’re passionate about providing a memorable experience, and it’s always a pleasure to dine somewhere where the team takes pride in their work. They made us feel like valued guests, which added to the overall charm of our visit.

As for the Sunday lunch, it was nothing short of superb. We opted for the classic roast beef, and it did not disappoint. The roast beef was tender and juicy, cooked to perfection, and paired beautifully with fluffy Yorkshire puddings and perfectly crispy roast potatoes. The seasonal vegetables were fresh and delicious, and the gravy was rich and savoury that tied everything together beautifully. Every bite was a comforting reminder of why traditional Sunday roasts hold such a cherished place in British cuisine and has always been a particular favourite of mine too.

The drink selection at The Crown also deserves mention, they offer a variety of local ales, wines, and craft beers, making it easy to find something that pairs well with the meal. I particularly enjoyed a couple of glasses of delicious red wine, that went perfectly with the beef.

In a world of venues that are ever evolving into more modern gastro-type pubs, The Crown in Bray is a rare gem that holds onto its heritage with pride. Every detail, from the ambience to the service to the food is thoughtfully created, ensuring a true British pub experience. If you’re ever in Bray, make sure to treat yourself to a Sunday lunch here; you’ll leave with a full belly, a happy heart, and fond memories of this charming pub.
