Bliss at Tamarind Hills in Antigua
There is no doubt that waking up to the sound of the waves caressing the white sand of Ffryes Beach is balm for the soul. I was excited about spending a long weekend at Tamarind Hills to experience the recently finished one- and two-bedroom suites, a nice addition to the bigger three- and four-bedroom apartments and villas Tamarind Hills is known for.
The new suites are nestled on the hill facing Ffryes Beach, perfectly positioned to enjoy the morning sun. They are immaculate and beautifully decorated in earthy tones and a chic design. The bathroom is gorgeous with slate floors, a huge shower, a stand-alone bathtub and fluffy large towels. The kitchen is perfectly integrated and fitted with a breakfast table that allows you to sit and have your morning coffee while looking out on the blue hues of the Caribbean Ocean. The terrace has two very comfortable sunbeds that were perfect for an afternoon nap when the sun had moved over to the west.
The sunset was amazing the first evening with incredible colours setting the horizon on fire with Montserrat, Redonda and Nevis islands all clearly visible. Such a spectacular end to a very nice afternoon spent by the private pool in one of the oceanfront villas, enjoying a chilled glass of rosé while watching the turtles swimming below.
The three- and four-bedroom villas all have their own pool, outdoor kitchen and BBQ and dining table. For those who enjoy cooking, they make it very easy for you. Should you wish to have a private chef cooking for you and your guests, Tamarind Hills will facilitate this. A beautiful restaurant, a sunset bar overlooking the beach and a swimming pool are under construction and should be ready in January, so for now its home cuisine or a short walk or drive to a variety of restaurants in and around Jolly Harbour. The planned spa also looks promising but should you desire a spa treatment in your villa, it will be arranged by the very efficient in-house concierge service.
We decided to BBQ and have dinner al-fresco on the terrace. The sounds of the Antiguan night are very unique and coupled with the soft sound of the waves just below made for a breath-taking setting.
Comfort was the feeling on my mind when I later sank into the very inviting king-size four-poster bed for a good night sleep and it didn’t disappoint. The soft duvet and fresh linen felt wonderful, and I didn’t stir until morning.
There is a myriad of hiking trails around Tamarind Hills, but in the morning, I was eager to start the day with a walk along the beach as the sun was rising on the horizon. Tamarind Hills’ setting is glorious on the south-west coast of Antigua, which is lined with one beautiful beach after another. The brisk one-hour walk started at the beginning of Ffryes Beach, continued through Little Ffryes and Valley Church Beach before turning back. The turquoise blue of the sea was so inviting that I dipped in to cool off along the way. A much-recommended way to start the day when staying at this beautiful property. I chose going north but there are options; the famous Darkwood Beach is on the south side of Tamarind Hills and it is equally, if not more beautiful, heading down that coastline.
Two days at Tamarind Hills will certainly leave you wanting more. There is so much more to experience. A day on the water sailing or deep-sea fishing, a day trip to Barbuda with helicopter, hiking inland or along the coast, dining out in one of the many restaurants in English Harbour and much more.
There is no doubt that Tamarind Hills exerts a perfect harmony between landscape/seascape and interior. At one with the ocean, the hues and the sounds. You have all you need right there.
Note that Tamarind Hills also arranges VIP airport arrival and departure assistance and luxury car collection at the airport. And don’t forget to request pre-arrival grocery stocking before you come.
