Beth Davies reviews Parkgate Hotel Cardiff
There’s something deeply comforting about a hotel that feels like it remembers. Not just the guests that have passed through its doors, but the stories of what stood before. In the heart of Cardiff, The Parkgate Hotel is not your average city centre stay, it’s a grand, evocative blend of history and modern luxury, where the ghosts of hand-written letters and stamped packages linger just beyond the velvet curtains. The Parkgate Hotel has been redeveloped from two historic civic buildings dating from the turn of the 20th Century, the former Head Post Office for Cardiff and the city’s old County Court on Westgate Street.
From the moment you step through its grand entrance – arched doorways, polished marble floors, and lighting that glows like candlelight – it’s clear that The Parkgate doesn’t just offer accommodation. It offers an atmosphere. The branding alone is a quiet tribute: the distinctive ‘P’ logo takes inspiration from the quills that once scratched across legal briefs and envelopes, with feather motifs that nod subtly to both history and heritage, and to the hotel’s proud connection to the Welsh Rugby Union.
I checked into The Parkgate Hotel, and from the moment I stepped through the grand entrance, it was clear that this place is more than just another luxury hotel; it’s a love letter to Cardiff’s past.
There were playful touches – an old postal mark printed delicately on the welcome note, for instance – that grounded the space in its former life without shouting about it. It was personal, intimate… like staying in a place that had taken the time to write to you in advance. Every detail, from the plush fabrics to the bespoke furniture, felt curated for comfort and connection.
After settling in and soaking up the charm of the room, I made my way to the hotel’s spa and pool facilities. Hidden away like a secret beneath the bustle of the building, the spa is a welcome sanctuary. The pool itself feels almost cinematic, moodily lit, serene, and peaceful. The kind of place where time slows, and the city outside seems to disappear. After a blissfully warm swim and a quick dip in the hydrotherapy pool, I emerged entirely relaxed. At The Parkgate Hotel Spa, they have four elegant treatment rooms that provide a sanctuary to unwind with a delectable choice of Elemis’ finest treatments. These suites can also be transformed into two dual treatment rooms, allowing you to share the experience with a friend or partner.
And then, there was dinner, which truly sealed the deal! The Sorting Room, the hotel’s elegant restaurant, is another masterclass in blending history with contemporary taste. Once quite literally a sorting room for Cardiff’s post, it now serves as a stage for beautifully prepared dishes and quietly impeccable service. The walls still whisper of letters once passed between sweethearts, wartime families, and distant pen pals. There’s a romance in that, and fittingly, the meal lived up to it.
We shared a Chateaubriand, cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection and served with rich, indulgent sides that were impossible to ignore. It was one of those meals where every mouthful makes you pause, take a sip of wine, and glance at your dining companion with wide-eyed appreciation.
As I walked back to my room, stomach full and spirit lifted, I passed an old post office sign tucked discreetly along the hallway. It reminded me again: this hotel isn’t just stylish – it’s soulful. It knows where it comes from. And as I tucked myself into bed beneath soft sheets and soft lighting, I felt part of its story too.
So yes, Cardiff has its castles and its stadiums, its arcades and its lively pubs. But next time you find yourself in this part of Wales, do yourself a favour – book into The Parkgate. Swim. Eat. Sleep. Remember.
And if you’re feeling inspired, maybe even send a postcard home.
