Luxuria Lifestyle interviews Dr Adam Nusenbaum
Dr Adam Nusenbaum is an esteemed aesthetic doctor at the renowned Dr David Jack Clinic in London. With a passion for advanced skincare and non-surgical rejuvenation, he specializes in bespoke treatments, delivering exceptional results for his discerning clientele.
Dr Adam, aesthetic treatments for men are becoming more popular, but there’s still a stigma attached to them. Why do you think some men feel hesitant about getting treatments?
It’s fascinating to see the growing interest in medical aesthetic treatments among men, especially considering that the field has traditionally been viewed as predominantly female-focused, so for men entering the Aesthetic space, as you mentioned, historically there has always been a certain amount of stigma attached to it. However, following the rise of the male grooming industry over the past few decades, the male aesthetic sector has been gaining significant momentum. A 2024 study by the British College of Aesthetic Medicine revealed a 70% increase in men seeking aesthetic treatments since 2021. This shift has helped challenge the stigma and judgment that once surrounded men’s involvement in aesthetic procedures, making it more widely accepted and normalized.
At the Dr. David Jack Clinic, what are some of the most common concerns men come in with when considering a treatment?
A major concern for many men is achieving subtle, natural-looking results. They want to enhance their appearance without appearing “overdone” or excessively treated. Additionally, men often prioritize treatments with minimal downtime and recovery, as well as those that require little ongoing maintenance.
Many men worry that having treatments will make them look ‘unnatural’ or ‘done.’ How do you ensure results look subtle and enhance masculinity rather than alter it?
We understand that many men are concerned about looking “unnatural” or “overdone” after treatments and our approach is designed to address those concerns while enhancing, not altering, masculinity. The key to achieving subtle, natural results is in the way we tailor each treatment to the individual. We focus on enhancing your unique features without making dramatic changes, using the minimum amount of product necessary to achieve natural, yet impactful results.
What are the most popular aesthetic treatments for men at the Dr David Jack Clinic, and how do they differ from those for women?
At the Dr. David Jack Clinic, we offer a diverse range of aesthetic treatments for both men and women, each tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual. A fundamental part of our approach is understanding the anatomical differences and how the ageing process differs between the genders.
By understanding these key differences, we can create results that enhance natural features while respecting the distinct characteristics that define masculinity and femininity. For men, when the goal is to restore volume and structure, preserving strong jawlines and angular features that are typically associated with a masculine look. For women, we focus on softening and contouring. The key is to avoid feminizing male patients or vice versa unless that is the specific goal. By recognizing these differences, we ensure each treatment enhances the individual’s natural aesthetic, ensuring we achieve results that are gender-appropriate.
For our male patients, one of the most common concerns is the eye area, with issues like hollowness, dark circles, and crepey skin often taking precedence. As a result, treatments such as Tear Trough Filler and Polynucleotides are particularly popular. In contrast, women tend to focus more often on areas around the mouth as they experience signs of ageing, when compared to their male counterparts.
With social media and high-profile male celebrities openly embracing aesthetic treatments, do you think attitudes are changing?
Yes absolutely, attitudes towards aesthetic treatments for men are changing, in part due to the influence of social media and high-profile male celebrities who are openly embracing these treatments. While social media can sometimes perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards, in my opinion when used correctly, it can serve as a powerful educational platform. By sharing honest, transparent information about how treatments can be done in a way that enhances natural features and boosts self-confidence, we help patients understand the real benefits of these treatments. Social media allows us to educate our audience about achieving subtle, refined results that promote self-esteem without compromising individuality, shifting the narrative towards positive, natural enhancements rather than drastic changes, which unfortunately has become far too prevalent in recent times, especially on Social Media.
Skincare is often marketed towards women. What advice would you give to men who want to improve their skin but don’t know where to start?
This is a common question I hear from my male patients almost every day and I completely understand how overwhelming it can be. With the sheer volume of products available and the rapid pace at which the industry evolves, it’s easy to feel unsure about where to begin. It’s especially challenging when skincare is often marketed primarily towards women, making it harder for men to know where to focus.
For my male patients just beginning their skincare journey, my ethos is simple: to get maximum benefit with minimum fuss. There’s no need to complicate things, and you can see real results with just three straightforward steps. First, start with a skin-brightening antioxidant, like Vitamin C, to protect and revitalize the skin. The next, and probably the most important step, is applying a high SPF—ideally SPF 50—every day. UV rays from daylight are one of the major contributors to premature ageing, so protection is key. Lastly, incorporate a Retinoid into your evening routine. Retinoids are excellent for improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.
All of these essential ingredients, along with many others, can be found in the Dr. DAVID JACK Daily Skin Trio. The simple, three-step regimen is designed to bring patients the latest in skincare technology while offering an easy and effective routine. Starting with these steps is a great way for men to take charge of their skin without overcomplicating things.
Men are known for being low-maintenance when it comes to self-care. Are there any treatments at the Dr. David Jack Clinic that deliver long-term results with minimal upkeep?
When it comes to anti-ageing treatments, it’s important to remember that maintenance is key, as the ageing process is a continuous one. However, yes some treatments do require less upkeep than others. One such example is Morpheus8, a highly popular treatment among our male patients. This powerhouse treatment combines microneedling with radiofrequency to rejuvenate the skin and remodel subdermal fat. It helps improve skin laxity, by boosting Collagen and elastin production resulting in tighter, smoother and more youthful-looking skin. It also moulds and sculpts the subdermal fat to restore the definition lost during the ageing process. The treatment requires a course of 2-3 sessions, followed by only a single session every 1-2 years to maintain optimal results.
A lot of men worry about ageing but don’t want to go down the invasive route. What are some non-surgical treatments that can help with signs of ageing while maintaining a natural, masculine look?
For our male patients, who as I mentioned, prioritize natural-looking results, one particular group of treatments stands out and that is Skin Boosters. Treatments such as Exosomes, Polynucleotides, and Profhilo are extremely popular for this reason. These treatments work by boosting the production of collagen and elastin, enhancing and optimising overall skin quality and health. The appeal for many male patients lies in how these treatments harness the body’s regenerative power, ensuring results that look and feel exceptionally natural.
What role does testosterone and male skin physiology play in the ageing process, and how does this differ for men vs. women?
Testosterone plays a crucial role in male skin physiology, making men’s skin about 25% thicker than women’s. This thicker skin is also more oily and contains more collagen, which provides a firmer, more robust structure. As a result, the ageing process for men tends to be steadier and more linear. In contrast, women experience a slower ageing process that peaks around the perimenopausal stage, where hormonal shifts cause a more dramatic decline in collagen production and skin elasticity, leading to more rapid changes in their skin appearance.
This difference means that men may begin to show the signs of ageing earlier in life than women. While both genders experience the gradual breakdown of skin structures over time, the linear ageing process for men often results in these changes being more noticeable at an earlier stage. Women, on the other hand, typically maintain a more youthful appearance for longer, due to the slower onset of ageing.
Additionally, men have higher melanin content levels in their skin, which gives them more protection from UV damage but also makes them more prone to pigmentation issues, such as sun spots. The cumulative effects of sun exposure over time can cause these pigmentation issues to become more visible. To address this, treatments like Lumecca, a non-invasive intense pulsed light (IPL) device, have become especially popular in clinics for men. Lumecca targets both red and brown pigmentation (chromatophores), such as those caused by sun exposure, breaking them down to reveal a brighter, clearer complexion. This makes it an ideal treatment for men who want to reduce the visible effects of sun damage and pigmentation, helping them maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin.
