Creating An Enriching Environment For Your Cat

Our cats may come across as sleepy couch potatoes that come and go as they please, but this isn’t quite the case. They may love a snooze, but felines need ample opportunities for mental and physical stimulation, as well as the space to support their natural instincts.

There are over 10 million pet cats in the UK and each one is equal parts playful predator and vulnerable pet. They need a safe environment to scratch, play and climb that is free of stresses and danger.

Here is how you can create an enriching setting for your cat to grow:

Understanding Your Cat’s Natural Instincts

Hunting, climbing and scratching are natural behaviours in your kitty and to prevent frustration, these instincts need to be stimulated. This can be done with feathered toys, motorised mice or interactive feeders that satisfy their hunting and foraging instincts.

Providing your cat with an outlet for scratching not only will keep them happy but will protect your furniture from damage. Cat scratching posts promote claw health and allow them to scratch that itch. To encourage use, place them in areas where they already spend time.

Providing Opportunities for Physical Exercise

We love treating our kitties with the tastiest treats but keeping on top of their physical health should be a priority. You can keep your feline fit by encouraging interactive play sessions with cat trees, tunnels and high shelves.

Obesity in cats is a problem in the UK, with perhaps as many as 40 to 50 percent of felines being heavier than is healthy. This can lead to a weakened immune system, sore joints, metabolic disorders and even cardiovascular disease. Indoor cats are particularly at risk of becoming overweight.

Mental Stimulation and Preventing Boredom

Cats are smart so they need cognitive challenges and mental stimulation through puzzle feeders, scent games and regular new stimuli. This is to prevent boredom which can lead to troublesome behaviour problems such as overeating, overgrooming and aggression towards owners.

This is especially the case when they are left alone for long periods, such as when you go on holiday or during the working day. In these cases, you should have a pet sitter arranged or supply them with ample toys that can keep you engaged until you return.

Creating Safe Outdoor Experiences

If your kitty is an outdoor cat, you need to safeguard the external areas you have control over. Catios (cat patios) are enclosures where pets can enjoy the fresh air securely and provide them with climbing opportunities and shelter. You can also take them on supervised walks using a harness.

To protect them when they’re out exploring, you can equip your kitty with a breakaway collar that will open immediately if your cat gets caught on a fence or branch.
