A sustainable sanctuary in the heart of Copenhagen: Hotel SP34
In the vibrant heart of Copenhagen, where design meets culture and history dances with modernity, lies a sanctuary of eco-conscious luxury—Hotel SP34. This boutique gem, part of the Brochner Hotel family, is not just a place to stay; it’s an experience that seamlessly blends sophisticated design, personalised service, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.
With the Brochner hotels achieving a B-CORP certificate in 2024, Brochner hotels core values rest in responsibility, care and passion. Their specific goals and actions to reduce energy consumption, phase out all disposable plastics, reduce food waste, and collaborate with local organisations that involve donating products in excess to shelters in Denmark. This means they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, all without compromising on comfort or refined luxury. So I just had to try Hotel SP34 (one of their flagship hotels) for myself.
A Sanctuary of Design and Comfort
From the moment we stepped into Hotel SP34, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of understated elegance, where sustainability is not an afterthought but a core value woven into every aspect of the guest experience. The building itself is a testament to the hotel’s green ethos. A carefully restored 19th-century townhouse, Hotel SP34 has been revitalised with modern, eco-friendly technologies that respect the building’s historic charm while dramatically reducing its carbon footprint.
Inside, each of the 118 rooms, 26 Apartment suites and public spaces are an elegant blend of Scandinavian minimalism and sustainable luxury. Natural materials, such as reclaimed wood and locally-sourced stone, dominate the interiors, providing a sense of warmth and serenity. The colour palette—a mix of earthy tones and soft, neutral hues—further enhances the connection to nature, creating a calming environment that invites relaxation.
The lobby bar at the hotel is the first thing you meet on arrival – offering Denmark’s largest selection of port wines and some special cocktails. As the heart of the hotel, Brochner has established a Wine Hour (5-6pm) and Nightcap Hour (10-11pm) every day (in all their hotels), creating a social and vibrant atmosphere for all guests who are invited to try the hotel’s port, red or white wine (all complementary). We tried the white wine ‘ONE’, made by the acknowledged Portuguese winery Adega Mayor for Brøchner Hotels. There are also shifting exhibitions in the lobby bar area with local Danish artists and one Friday each month, the hotel showcases a different musical artist, open to guests and locals. Brochner Hotels is leading the way in putting people at the heart of everything they do, fostering a culture of openness and innovation.
Culinary excellence
Dining at Hotel SP34 is an experience in itself, centred around Vækst, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Vækst, which means “growth” in Danish, is a testament to the hotel’s commitment to sustainable, organic, and locally-sourced cuisine. The restaurant is set in a stunning glass greenhouse, filled with lush greenery that creates a serene, garden-like atmosphere. We took breakfast here, spending a large part of our morning slowly trying the array of delicious and healthy morning treats and beverages.
Sustainability also extends here, to the local sourcing of food, beverages, and other products. The hotel’s restaurant and bar focus on organic, locally-sourced ingredients, emphasising seasonal produce from nearby farms (with the breakfast selection always consisting of 90-100% organic ingredients). This not only supports the local economy (to foster a regional food system that is both sustainable and resilient) but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods over long distances.
Exclusive Amenities and Personalised Service
One of the hallmarks of a stay at Hotel SP34 is the personalised service. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that every guest feels valued and cared for. A key highlight for me is how hotel staff really engage guests in its sustainability efforts. For example, the ability for hotel guests to rent a bike for the day encourages guests to explore Copenhagen in new and exciting ways – perfectly set up to prioritise cyclists, there really is no better way to see the sights of the city.
The hotel’s location in Copenhagen’s vibrant Latin Quarter places guests within walking distance of numerous local attractions, further encouraging eco-friendly travel behaviours. But should you need to travel by car, the hotel also has a collaboration with a fully electric taxi company in the city – so you can rest assured they have thought about every aspect of travelling responsibly. Additionally, the hotel offers curated experiences that highlight Copenhagen’s green initiatives, such as tours of urban farms and visits to sustainable design studios, and staff are only too happy to help arrange these for you.
With the hotel boasting a private cinema, small but well equipped gym, as well as an urban terrace, various restaurants and even meeting rooms should you need a working space for up to 80 people, it’s clear Hotel SP34 is designed to cater to every aspect of the guest experience. Whether it’s arranging a private city tour, securing reservations at one of Copenhagen’s top restaurants, or simply offering a warm smile and a greeting, the team at Hotel SP34 goes above and beyond to make each stay exceptional.
Overall thoughts
The hotel’s commitment to the environment is evident in its thoughtful choices, from the architectural design to the smallest details in your room. A stay at SP34 is an immersion into the essence of Copenhagen’s sophisticated yet laid-back lifestyle. It’s where luxury meets sustainability, where modern design meets historic charm, and where every detail is crafted to create an experience that lingers long after you’ve checked out.
