Susana Anaya is a distinguished artist known for her vibrant, emotionally resonant paintings that explore themes of identity, nature, and the human condition. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, capturing the hearts and minds of art enthusiasts globally.

Can you describe the journey that led you to become an artist and how your background has influenced your work?

My journey as an artist began in my childhood, surrounded by the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of my hometown. My family encouraged me to express myself creatively from a young age. My background, rich with diverse experiences and a deep connection to nature, profoundly influences my work. The exploration of identity, both personal and cultural, has been a constant theme in my art, allowing me to delve into the complexities of the human experience.

What are the central themes you explore in your art, and why are these important to you?

The central themes in my art include identity and nature. These themes are important to me because they resonate with universal human experiences and emotions. Identity is a complex, multifaceted concept that I enjoy exploring through my paintings, reflecting both individual and collective aspects. Nature, with its beauty and power, serves as a profound source of inspiration, reminding us of our connection to the world around us. The human condition, with all its joys and struggles, is an endless well of inspiration that allows me to connect with my audience on a deep emotional level.

How do you approach the creative process and can you walk us through a typical day in your studio?

My creative process begins with inspiration, which can come from anywhere—nature, a conversation, a memory, or even a dream. In the studio, I start with a period of quiet reflection, allowing ideas to surface naturally.

A typical day involves a balance of painting, experimenting with techniques, and stepping back to evaluate my work. Music often accompanies me, creating an atmosphere that fosters creativity. During my trips, I immerse myself in nature, which refreshes my mind and often sparks new ideas.

Your paintings often feature an array of beautiful colours, how do you decide on your colour palettes?

Colour is a vital element of my work, and I choose my palettes intuitively. Each piece has its own mood and message, and the colours I use reflect and enhance these. Sometimes, I experiment with different combinations until I find the perfect harmony. The goal is to create a visual language that speaks to the viewer on an emotional level, using colour to evoke specific feelings and atmospheres.

What role does nature play in your work, and how do you incorporate the natural world into your art?

Nature is a constant source of inspiration for me because there is no perfect beauty than absolute nature.

Can you share the story behind one of your favourite pieces and what it means to you?

One of my favourite pieces is “Colores Mexicanos.” This painting is a vibrant celebration of my cultural heritage and the rich, diverse tapestry of Mexican life. It features a kaleidoscope of colours, capturing the energy and spirit of traditional Mexican festivals. The piece is filled with intricate patterns and symbols that reflect the country’s deep history and folklore.

“Colores Mexicanos” was inspired by the artisans in Mexico. During a visit to various artisan markets and workshops, I was deeply moved by the incredible craftsmanship and creativity of these artists. Their dedication to preserving traditional techniques while infusing their work with contemporary flair was truly inspiring. The vivid textiles, intricate pottery, and detailed wood carvings all left a lasting impression on me.

Creating “Colores Mexicanos” allowed me to pay homage to these talented artisans and the cultural legacy they uphold. The painting reflects my admiration for their artistry and the vibrant traditions that shape Mexican identity. This piece holds a special place in my heart because it represents a fusion of personal memory and cultural pride. Through “Colores Mexicanos,” I aim to share the warmth, joy, and richness of Mexican culture with a broader audience, inviting them to experience the colours and emotions that make it so unique.

How do you stay inspired and motivated, especially during challenging times?

I can’t create when I am stressed, so I start by working on my orders. Focusing on commissions and fulfilling requests helps me get back into the rhythm of creating. It provides a structured way to engage with my art, even when inspiration feels distant. As I immerse myself in these tasks, I often find that the act of creating rekindles my inspiration.

What message or emotion do you hope viewers take away from your work?

I hope viewers feel a sense of connection and introspection when they experience my art. I want my paintings to evoke emotions that resonate on a deep, personal level, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own lives and experiences. Ultimately, I aim to convey a message of hope, resilience, and the beauty of the human spirit. Through my work, I want to inspire others to appreciate the world around them and to find strength and solace in art.

How has your art evolved over the years, and what are some memorable moments that have shaped your artistic journey?

My art has evolved significantly over the years, both in technique and thematic focus. Early in my career, I experimented with various styles and mediums, gradually finding my unique signature. Memorable moments include my first solo exhibitions, and group exhibitions with women, which gave me the confidence to pursue art full-time. Each experience, whether a triumph or a challenge, has shaped my artistic journey and helped me grow as an artist.

What advice would you give to emerging artists who are looking to find a place in the art world?

My advice to emerging artists is to not be afraid to take risks and to believe in yourself. The art world can be daunting, but confidence in your unique vision and voice is crucial. Push boundaries and explore new ideas, even if they feel unconventional or challenging.

Create your own signature—something that nobody else has done before. This means developing a style or approach that is distinctly yours, one that reflects your personal experiences, emotions, and perspectives. This unique signature will help you stand out in a crowded field and attract the attention of those who appreciate authenticity and originality.
