What you need to consider before investing in new patio furniture
Spring is here and for many of us, that means getting out and prepping our garden for those days when we get clear skies and a little bit of warmth.
Many people will always be well underway with their garden preparations, and may even be undergoing major work at the moment, such as installing patios. So, you’ve got the limestone tiles down, the plants have been potted and all you now need to do is get your furniture sorted.
It’s the final step in creating your perfect space for summer, but when it comes to picking the right furniture there is a lot to think about to ensure your space looks and feels right with that furniture in place.
So, if you’re spending time walking around the likes of B&Q, Dunhelm and IKEA at the moment, here’s what you need to think about before investing in garden furniture…
Outdoor Space and Layout
Before you even start looking at garden furniture, the first thing you need to know is how much space you have to deal with. Consider the shape and dimensions of your patio or outdoor space, alongside what else you want to feature in it.
When it comes to the spatial element, you of course need to think about size. You want any furniture to fit comfortably in it. Alongside this, you also need to think about the placement of it and how that fits in with the functionality of the space, while considering traffic flow is also key. There needs to be space for easy movement around the patio and into various garden areas.
Weather Resistance and Durability
We live in the UK, so it perhaps comes as no surprise to note that taking into account the weather is an absolute must. Patio furniture does get exposed to the elements without protection, so you want to invest in furniture that is hardwearing, weatherproof and requires minimal maintenance.
The likes of aluminium, stainless steel, wicker and rattan and hardwoods like cedar, teak and eucalyptus are all known for their weather-resistant properties, while you will also find plenty of tips for waterproofing wood too out there. What’s more, any upholstery and cushioning you use should also be specifically designed for outdoor use.
Comfort and Ergonomics
Comfort should be prioritised too. While you might like the look of a chair, if it isn’t very comfortable, you are probably not going to end up spending much time using it. There needs to be adequate support and plenty of cushioning for relaxation.
When looking at garden furniture, consider seat depth, cushion thickness and armrests and back support the designs offer. This will help you make a more informed decision about the furniture. And don’t forget to test it!
Style and Aesthetic Appeal
Naturally, style is integral too. You want something visually appealing in your garden. Select furniture that complements the architectural style of the home, and your taste and fits in with the aesthetic of the rest of the garden.
You need to think about whether you’re looking for something traditional, modern or rustic, as well as things such as the colour, the material and how you potentially co-ordinate it with other furniture in your garden.
Budget and Investment Value
Finally, and perhaps even most importantly, you need to understand your budget. While it may be tempting to go for budget-friendly options, investing in high-quality furniture can be better in the long run.
Consider your budget and what you can get for it in terms of the quality of materials, as well as any warranties that come with it. Sometimes it really can make sense to spend that little bit more.
