Six by Nico – A bounty of flavour is packed into every dish
This week I had the pleasure of dining at a restaurant that changes its menu every six weeks! The concept is that you have a six-course tasting menu; inspired by a particular theme; every six weeks, it changes to something different.
Nico Simeone launched the first Six by Nico restaurant in Finnieston, Glasgow, in 2017 and his second restaurant in Edinburgh in 2018. By 2019 he opened more in Belfast, Manchester, Liverpool and London’s Fitzrovia. In 2021, Six by Nico Canary wharf was born!
Six by Nico is a restaurant in Canary Wharf which boasts beautiful views of the River Thames. The theme of our meal was Greece-inspired, with wine pairings influenced by the party town of Mykonos. Upon entering, the energy of the restaurant felt welcoming and had a warm vibe. Alongside that, the staff were just as accommodating.
Once we sat down, we had the choice between three tasting menus, meat, vegetarian and the newly added vegan menu. The great thing about choosing which menu you want is that the restaurant suggests that you can swap any of the dishes from the other menus. I love the flexibility of being able to customise your six courses, as it added to the overall wow factor of the experience. Also, we sat facing the open kitchen which gave our night more of an atmosphere; watching our dishes being made right in front of us was really interesting.
Before visiting, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a tasting menu; I had in my mind that we would be served the tiniest portions of food and leave feeling rather hungry, but this was not the case! The course sizes were well portioned; I can vouch that I left feeling very contented with my meal.
The stand-out dishes for me were the chickpea and roasted garlic hummus, even typing that made my mouth water, followed by delicious warm, toasted pitta bread with a dash of Greek olive oil. My guest and I had a joint favourite course; the stone sea bass served with courgette, green olive tapenade topped with the most crispy squid and lemon emulsion. And lastly, the flavours of the cauliflower steak were just out of this world; I didn’t know a cauliflower could taste so flavoursome. Accompanied with that; was green harissa, a spicy chilli paste, and a side of almonds with couscous.
Overall, my first ever six-course meal exceeded my expectations; there was so much variety of flavours in our dishes, and discussing our favourite courses made the experience even more enjoyable. I would recommend this restaurant all year round as menu changing makes it unique each time you visit. Adding to that, if you’re a massive foodie then an experience like this would be perfect as there’s so much to try, and your tastebuds will be thanking you.
Six by Nico is a unique dining experience I feel everyone would enjoy; it’s great value for money. The six courses are £44 per person, and for wine pairings, £35 extra. One of the great things about this restaurant is that if you like trying one-off experiences, like me, then new menus every six weeks will feel like you’re dining in a new restaurant. I think it would be fun to have a date night; every six weeks, where you can try each menu, Six by Nico has to offer.
Their Greece menu will run from Monday 29th August for six weeks until October 9th across all Six by Nico sites, including Six by Nico London Canary Wharf. Bookings are now open for all restaurant locations (Aberdeen, Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, London Fitzrovia and Manchester) and can be made online here
