Baron Philippe de Rothschild brings out the best in Chilean Wine
For red wine with depth and evolution, look no further – Escudo Rojo is the distinctive wine crafted with quality and excellence. The wine is a result of the encounter between Chilean terroirs and the French know-how of Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
In the late 1990’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, true to the pioneering spirit of its founder, decided to explore the viticultural paradise that is Chile. The daughter of the great Baron Philippe, Baroness Philippine, was keen to implement her exacting standards to produce a range of high-quality wines expressing the diversity of Chile’s valleys.
The Escudo Rojo is created using fruit nurtured in the Maipo Valley and brings together the richness of the New World with the refinement of the old world. Half the vintage is matured in one-year-old oak barrels for 12-months.
The flavour boasts refined and elegant expressions of French and native grape varieties rooted in Chilean terriors: Cabernet Sauvignon (40% blend), Carmenere (38%), Syrah (20%) and Cabernet Franc (2%). It’s not just the beautiful blend and flavour that pops with this wine though, the colour is a deep captivating red and the depth of plum, cherry and blackberry are a real treat on the palate.
Emmanuel, Riffaud, Winemaker Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chile, says: “Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chile has been innovating constantly since it was established in Chile at the end of the last century.”
Escudo Rojo is the first vintage released under the Gran Reserva label and represents improved quality of the wines. Recently this wine has enjoyed a score of 93/100 by the renowned critic James Suckling.
This beautifully complex wine has rich notes with juicy black fruits that are well balanced with the oak, vanilla and coffee bean. Enjoy this with a steak, available from Harrods or Ocado for £17.
